World’s Only Floating Nuclear Power Plant Akademik Lomonosov Put into Commercial Operation

On May 22, 2020, the unique floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov, which is unparalleled anywhere in the world, with electric power of 70 MW and two KLT-40S reactor plants designed by JSC “Afrikantov OKBM” was put into commercial operation in the town of Pevek.

The power plant will supply energy to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and in the future it shall replace the technologically obsolete Bilibino NPP (power – 48 MW, commissioned in 1974) and the coal-powered Chaun Thermal Power Plant. To start up the plant, new objects of the shore grid were built which ensure the communication of the plant with the high-voltage networks of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

Akademik Lomonosov is equipped with two KLT-40S marine propulsion reactors. Similar reactors are used on the nuclear icebreakers Taymyr and Vaygach. In 2010, the power unit was set afloat. In summer 2016, the dock trials started. In 2018, the two KLT-40S reactor plants achieved the first criticality and were started up in Murmansk.

The floating nuclear power plant is expected to reach its full power by 2021 and it will replace the Bilibino NPP which will have been decommissioned by that time. Akademik Lomonosov will be the northernmost nuclear power plant in the world.

Taking into account that the floating nuclear power plant with floating power unit Akademik Lomonosov is a pilot project, the start of its operation will permit to speak about practical application of nuclear power for supply of heat and energy to distant regions and about reference of the applied technologies.

The technical solutions of the KLT-40S RP design are legally protected, and at present JCS “Afrikantov OKBM” is the owner of the following results of intellectual activity:

- 4 inventions,

- 4 useful models,

- 26 computer programs,

- 79 production secrets (know-how).

For further development of the floating nuclear power plant technology, the State Corporation ROSATOM is developing a new product in the segment of floating nuclear power plants - an optimized floating power unit (OFPU). It is supposed that one OFPU will have two reactor plants of RITM-200M type which will provide the total plant electrical power of 100 MW.
