Technical Keel Laying of the Third Commercial Multipurpose Nuclear Icebreaker Yakutia of Project 22220 Takes Place

On May 26, 2020, the keel of the third commercial multipurpose nuclear icebreaker of Project 22220 was laid. The new icebreaker got the name “Yakutia” and became the fourth nuclear-powered vessel of the project.

The name for the icebreaker was chosen following the traditions of Rosatomflot whereby the names are chosen from the geographic names of the objects of the Northern Sea Route or repeat the names of the legendary soviet nuclear icebreakers like Arktika which are now decommissioned.

For JSC “Afrikantov OKBM” as the chief designer and the complete supplier of RITM-200 reactor plants with power of 175 MW, this event is a bright professional milestone in the work of creation of a line of new-generation nuclear icebreakers for the development of the Northern Sea Route infrastructure.
